My Weekend with Bigas Luna

Oh boy, do I have a surprise for you!  Bigas Luna films are now streaming on Criterion-Trailer.

Titillating and beautifully shot, these films are a wonderful way to help drop you into that perfect SxXcation.

Spanish Director Bigas Luna

Introducing Bigas Luna, born in Barcelona in 1947, this iconoclastic Director broke into the cultural zeitgeist with social and sexual themes so ready to pop after Franco’s death in 1975. 

Surrealist inspired, Bigas Luna worked in advertising, made conceptual art pieces alongside his friend Salvador Dali, and in the early 1970s began shooting short pornographic films; an ideal segue to my “weekend with Bigas Luna” and his delectable 1990s sensual Spanish Trilogy.

While instinctually titillating, Luna’s true gift was to infuse cinematic storytelling with profound irony all wrapped up in delicious, machismo eroticism.  

His film direction encapsulates a grand passion deeply rooted in sexualized fantasy. 

Luna’s 1992 film, Jamón Jamón not only launched his career but the debut of actors Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Exquisitely shot, this comical, intergenerational, small town tale of sexual mores culminates in the castration of a giant fake bull.  Luca does not let up for a second, his escapades take the viewer on a roller coaster ride of salacious, bawdy fun.  

The Trilogy 

If you fall in love with Jamón Jamón as I did, good news, you can take the weekend and indulge. Luna follows it with Golden Balls (1993), then immediately with The Tit and the Moon (1994).

Each film in this Trilogy offers a perfect 1:30 minutes of pure sexual escape. Bigas Luna enraptures the viewer in a cinematographic wonderland that includes provocatively sexualized humans in a set and setting we should all be so lucky to escape to.  

Luna drops you in and lets you feel the moments with a light hearted, irrational undertone that left me smiling and wanting more.
