Swimming & Breath Work for Epic Sex

As the lifeguards find their way back to college, Denver Parks & Rec are winding down the outdoor swimming season. It has been a blast. Since signing up for the Sunset Triathlon - Boulder I find myself at the pool 4-5 days a week swimming 1800 meters without stopping.
I have surprised myself.
For me, swimming has always been an exercise that is about breathing, rhythm and headspace. Physically I can swim 2000+ meters without stopping. It is the mental challenge, the breathing, that gets in the way and makes me feel as if I am drowning and cannot find my breath.
Like all good things, this gets better and better with practice. Finding a rhythm and maintaining a single meditative thought while swimming allows me to separate the physical hurdles from the mental ones. With this, the rest is all “flow”.
The same can be said for “Epic Sex”
Tanya’s Tips: Find a pool near you! It may surprise you how easy it is. Communities big and small often have public pools that are very affordable and offer lap swimming. YMCA’s, Lifetime Fitness and many gyms offer swimming. This low impact exercise, while intimidating at first, is so good for mind and body.
Why Swimming and Breath Work?
Why not?
I find that practices like swimming, yoga and even running are where I do my best thinking and problem solving. It is a time when the clutter and noise of the day can be funneled into singular thoughts and purpose.
Finding time for regular fitness each day clears the mind and can allow you to super charge productivity when you come back up for air.
Sex like swimming is not always an activity you can jump into without mental preparation and scheduling. If you know it’s coming, your swimsuit, latex cap and googles are prepped and ready to go. If part of your daily routine you commit without thinking twice.
The same can be said for Sex.
Like Sex, swimming requires rhythm, breathing and flow. When you show up fully it teaches how to regulate and dial in breathing – a practice that has value on the yoga mat, deescalating challenging situations, and certainly between the sheets.

Tanya’s Tips: While I am the student and not the teacher when it comes to breath work, for me, breathing is all about practice, finding my flow and falling into a rhythm that allows single thoughts to flow. Once mastered, the art of breathing will serve you in all aspects of life.
Circling Back to Sex ‘n’ Drugs
After all, my weekly YestoSex newsletter centers around science, shame and culture as it relates to Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll.
I would be remiss if I did not circle back to Sex ‘n’ Drugs.
On the weekends, which start for me on Thursday evenings, I often find myself indulging in a 10mg edible gummy while practicing yoga, running, swimming, and/or biking. Practicing and understanding how to include psychoactive substances into fitness routines and sex has allowed me to drop into “flow states” with and without mind-altering substances.
Why I Use Cannabis and Micro-Dosed Psychedlics to Flow
It all comes back to meditative flow states, rhythm and breath. Micro-dosed cannabis and or classical psychedelics can both contribute to flow states and mental fitness. While neither are considered sports enhancing drugs champions like Michael Phelps have certainly indulged to bring the mind and breath online with fitness.
For me that includes “Epic Sex”.

While I do not always use psychoactive substances with fitness routines and sex when I choose to do so it is with intention. It requires practice, tracking and is best served when predictable.
When experimenting with new sports (fitness routines), sexual escapades and/or drugs, know your set and setting, listen to your mind and body, track the experience and then practice!
Tanya’s Tips: The best cannabis and micro-dosed psychedelic experiences are predictable. When taking any drug, understand the product, dosing and how it affects your mind and body. With practice you will learn to dial in the experience.
